What to look for when choosing an alarm company

Two houses in a quiet neighborhood are robbed during daytime hours while no one is around to stop the crime. Across town the news reports that a family was held up in their home at gun point by a burglar until police intervened and last week three local businesses were robbed during the night. Each day scenarios such as these play out in small towns and big cities across America. The FBI reports that nationally, a home is broken into every 14 seconds. That means by the time you’ve read this article at least 15 houses will be robbed. Isn’t it time you protected your home and family?

Consumers have many alarm companies and products to choose from when it comes to fulfilling their security needs. Many alarm companies describe themselves as being the best in the industry while blinding their customers with different promotions and slogans. While this strategy helps the alarm companies increase it’s profit its not always at the benefit of the consumer. Consumers need to inform themselves about alarm companies through basic research and ask their potential alarm companies a few questions before agreeing to service.

The first place to start your search for a good alarm company is by asking your friends, relatives, and neighbors for a referral. The best alarm companies have satisfied customers who have had an ongoing interaction with the company long after the salesman has left and the alarm was installed. While talking to friends about their experience find out what happened when they used their alarm. Ask them how fast the alarm companies response was and how they were treated. Find out from them if they have ever had any billing problems and how they were resolved and definitely ask them if they’ve ever had any service work performed and how it was handled. Many alarm companies do a great job selling you the initial product but fail to serve their client during technical and customer service issues.

After you’ve asked around for referrals, call your local organizations that handle business disputes such as the BBB and your local licensing agencies to ensure that any company you’re considering has a clean record and is licensed to do business. Many alarm companies are part of alarm associates that will also be able to assist you with your research and indicate to you if there have ever been problems with an alarm company before.

Once you’ve decided on a few companies that have received a good referral and are licensed without any complaints against them, ask them out to your home for an evaluation. Any company that pushes you too hard on the phone for the sale without first insisting on evaluating your home is going to be even pushier when they do come out to sell you an alarm system. Be wary of pushy salesmen who don’t have your best interest at heart. Evaluations should always be free and used as a time for both you and the alarm company to work together to create a unique security plan that fits both your lifestyle and budget.

While the alarm company is at your home is the best time for you to find out the details of how much you will need to pay for service, how long of a contract you will be required to sign, what types of equipment will be provided to you and what it will cost to add equipment to a basic alarm system plan. Don’t be afraid of companies that do ask you to sign a contract, but do make sure that they provide a warranty for their equipment and service without charging you high fees and find out the details of what you would need to do if you move out of your home.

Finally, make sure that before you agree upon an alarm company that all of your questions have been answered and that you feel comfortable with the company in general. Many consumers feel pressed by the salesman standing in their home or make decisions based on a promotion rather than doing the research they need to do in order to make a sound decision. While a big company that advertises on TV might seem like a no-brainer decision at first, after a little digging you might find that they have many unhappy customers and decide that another company is who you want protecting your family. In the end, any company you choose to protect your home will give you peace of mind the next time you hear burglary stories on the news and you know you’re safe at home with you alarm system turned on.
