Some steps to take that will increase the safety of you home

Whether or not you are the owner of a security system, there are some steps that you can take to greatly reduce the chances of your home being broken into by a burglar. Taking these steps can dramatically increase the safety of your home.

Many times homeowners will hide a spare key under a door mat or some other place they think a potential intruder will overlook. This is so common that it has to be addressed. Do you really want to hide a key from someone who makes their living looking for things that do not belong to them? Chances are likely that the person breaking into your home has found their fair share of spare keys. It may even be there chosen method for entering a home. If you insist on having a spare key, get a little more creative; you never know you may be able to get away with it. One such example would be to go to a local hardware store to buy a magnetic key holder. These devices are not a sure fire way to deter a break-in, but they do reduce the risk of one occurring especially when compared to the “hiding the key under the rock method”. Any brand should do, just make sure it has a place for your key and that it is magnetic so that you can stick it underneath a metal surface. Not all entry ways have areas that will accommodate such a device but if you’re lucky enough to have a water heater room that opens up to the outside of your home, usually you can put one in there.

Some homeowners in the interest of thrift, I guess, put off getting locks when they know that the ones they have are not working properly. They may even know of ways to open the door or window, with a little effort that is. Many thieves have prior experience as lock smiths. Not only do they know how to get into a home with working/ new locks, they are especially good at breaking into doors or windows with faulty locks. Don’t make it easy for someone to break into your home. Chances are likely, if you can open the door without a key or a locked window with a little “extra effort”, a criminal can too.

Another major problem are burglar alarms that are not turned on. Ok, so there are probably many people reading this article nodding their heads because this is very true. It is my opinion, that this behavior is an inherent quality exhibited by most humans, that is, to become complacent with things gradually over time; so don’t feel bad, you’re not the only one. When you purchase a home you want all of the bells and whistles, and this usually includes a home security system. You get your satellite; you get your phone service and your internet and then your alarm. The alarm seems so necessary right at first doesn’t it? But then you begin to meet the neighbors and they seem nice and of course you assume that they don’t have lives of their own and that their only desire in life is to stare out of their front window all day long at your property with the hopes of catching a would be intruder in the act and then shooting him/her with a pellet gun… Ok not exactly, well you get the point, as the new home-ownership period fades so does the desire to turn your alarm on. What good is an alarm if it is never activated? Trust me, one day if you come home and $20,000 worth of electronics and other valuables has been stolen and there are foot prints on your wife’s side of the bed, you’ll wish you had set the alarm system.

Here’s another way to think about it. Why would someone buy medical insurance? Because you never know when something bad is going to happen. A monitored home alarm system is like insurance. When something bad begins to happen like a burglary, it usually prevents it from getting any worse. Most criminals are going to want to get as far away from your home as possible once that alarm siren goes off and isn’t that exactly what we as homeowners want to happen?

In conclusion, there are many ways to protect your home. If your home is currently an easy target, take the steps necessary to protect your loved ones and personal belongings. A little thought and creative implementation can go a long way.
